FAQ

Are all 54 newly playable clans in the main Shogun 2 campaign?
No. The official list contains 18 factions for each of the three campaigns: Shogun 2, Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai.
Does every unlocked minor faction have verified unique traits here?
No. The official announcement verifies which factions are playable, but does not supply a complete faction-trait or balance database. Check the current selection screen instead of assuming a renamed major-clan bonus.
How should I choose a newly playable minor clan?
Select the historical campaign, then inspect the clan selection screen for its location, initial challenge and available information. The list establishes playability, not a verified ranking of all minor factions.

Pick the campaign before searching for a clan

The developer’s published list divides the new choices into three groups of 18. A name in Fall of the Samurai will not appear as a new Sengoku selection simply because both campaigns are included in the same package. The main campaign, Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai have separate historical settings and faction selections.

The tables below reproduce the official names, grouped by campaign, as checked on 14 October 2026. They record availability, not a ranking, starting treasury or invented faction traits.

Complete Edition strategic map with a color-coded province overlay across central Japan

The updated campaign map. Official overview, 1:25; this frame does not enumerate unlocked factions.

Shogun 2: 18 newly playable minor clans

Clan Clan Clan
Amako Anegakoji Asai
Ashina Hatakeyama Hatano
Honman Imagawa Ito
Kiso Miyoshi Mogami
Ouchi Satake Satomi
Shoni Urakami Yamana

Spelling note: the publisher’s list uses “Honman.” We preserve that spelling rather than silently changing it to the familiar legacy name Honma. Check the actual selection screen if you are looking for that clan.

Rise of the Samurai: 18 newly playable factions

Faction Faction Faction
Akamatsu Ashikaga Chiba
Doi Hata Ii
Inoue Kitabatake Kusunoki
Masuda Nitta Ochi
Ogata Okura Soga
Tatara Urakami Yamauchi

A reused name does not establish identical traits across historical campaigns. For example, Urakami appears in both this table and the main-campaign list; choose the intended campaign before comparing its opening.

Complete Edition diplomacy screen listing encountered clans and relations with Asai

Asai appears in the main-campaign unlock list. This diplomacy frame shows an encountered faction, not its player-selection traits. Official overview, 1:35.

Fall of the Samurai: 18 newly playable factions

Faction Faction Faction
Awaji-Sumoto Fukue Fukuoka
Hirosaki Hiroshima Kakegawa
Kogu Marugame Matsue
Matsumae Nagoya Oka
Okayama Sado Tanegashima
Tottori Tsushima-Fuchu Yodo

These are selections for the nineteenth-century campaign, rather than extra Sengoku clans with the same recruitment rules. Begin with the era’s mechanics before comparing starting geography.

Check an unfamiliar clan in four steps

  1. Open the correct campaign and inspect the selection card, including objectives and any displayed faction effects.
  2. Choose difficulty and inspect the available campaign settings. Read Realm Divide settings before assuming the legacy behavior.
  3. At campaign start, inspect provinces, existing wars, income and recruitment. A small faction’s name alone cannot tell you whether its position is easy.
  4. Save the opening and test a short run before committing to a long conquest plan. Use the beginner checklist to spot food, upkeep and diplomatic problems.

Complete Edition army selected on the campaign map with unit cards and nearby province information

Inspect the actual starting army and province information. Official overview, 8:25. This frame is not attributed to a newly playable minor faction.

Do you need a mod to unlock them?

The developer describes the listed minor factions as officially playable in Complete Edition. That is different from using a legacy unlock mod. Existing original-game mods are incompatible with the new edition, according to the publisher FAQ; consult mod compatibility before transferring a setup. If your main reason for buying is faction choice, weigh this official access against your current collection in the edition comparison.
