FAQ
What makes Oda strong in classic Shogun 2?
Are Oda Long Yari Ashigaru unchanged in Complete Edition?
Should I replace all Oda ashigaru with samurai immediately?
Start with one front, not a timetable
Scope: classic Sengoku. Oda starts in Owari, with Saito toward Mino and Tokugawa toward Mikawa; the official profile also describes Imagawa farther east. That geography makes the opening a diplomacy problem before it becomes a recruitment problem. Inspect your actual relations and armies before choosing a target. A scripted promise to take a particular province by turn three is unreliable across difficulty settings and enemy decisions.
Pick one achievable objective: remove an immediate hostile army, secure a border or take a useful neighboring province. Keep the army together until you know where retaliation can arrive. The beginner guide covers the checks to make before expanding.

Use province connections to plan a front. This illustration does not show Oda’s opening position.
Spend the clan bonus on a sustainable army
Oda’s documented classic traits give ashigaru improved morale and lower recruitment and upkeep costs. Use that advantage to field a coherent army early. Spear infantry holds the front, bow infantry contributes damage from safety, and a small reserve responds when the line bends.
More units are helpful only while your treasury can pay for them. Budget for replenishment, construction and defending newly captured settlements. Keep an economical core instead of replacing troops merely because a samurai building becomes available. The economy and food guide helps separate a profitable army from one that eats the campaign’s entire income.

Let ashigaru do a specific job
For spear infantry, read the Yari Wall guide and practice defending a frontage before experimenting with complicated maneuvers. Face the likely attack, leave time to settle into formation and avoid giving a chase order that breaks the position you wanted to defend.
Keep archers far enough behind to avoid immediate melee contact, but close enough to contribute. Watch friendly obstruction and the enemy’s approach instead of assuming every arrow reaches a useful target. Your general should support the army without becoming the first unit caught by enemy spears. Adapt the army composition framework to your budget and opponents.

Cheap infantry still needs flank protection; a clan bonus does not replace positioning.
Expand when you can defend what you take
Before starting the next war, ask whether a second army could appear behind you. A treaty, a reserve or a shorter border may be worth more than another hurried conquest. Stabilize public order and check food before upgrading castles. Later, prepare for Realm Divide before relying on diplomatic income indefinitely.
For Complete Edition, two published changes deserve attention: infantry fatigue now affects combat statistics correctly, and Oda Long Yari Ashigaru now receive applicable Yari bonuses and cost reductions. Avoid copying old exact-cost builds or exhaustion assumptions into the new edition. Compare editions in the buying guide before deciding which ruleset you want to play.
