FAQ

When did Shogun 2 Complete Edition release?
The Windows release was 13 October 2026 at 16:00 BST. The original Shogun 2 was released in 2011; these are separate releases.
What is the Steam loyalty discount?
The official FAQ announces 75% off for original Shogun 2 owners on Steam, from launch until 12 November 2026 at 16:00 GMT. Log into the owning account and verify the final regional checkout price.
Does Complete Edition include Fall of the Samurai?
Yes. It includes Shogun 2, Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai. Steam also bundles the legacy game and legacy DLC except the Blood Pack; other listed stores offer the new edition only.
Can I move my old mods and saves to Complete Edition?
Original mods are not compatible with Complete Edition, which uses Mod.io. The official FAQ does not confirm cross-edition save transfer; preserve a backup and keep the original installation for ongoing campaigns.

Should you buy Complete Edition or keep the original?

For a first purchase, Complete Edition is the more convenient starting point. For an established modded campaign, keep the original installed. The two editions solve different problems: the new release modernizes the interface and expands campaign choice, while the original preserves the mod environment you already know.

This comparison uses the official FAQ and developer change list, checked 14 October 2026. It is a sourced buying guide, not a claim that we benchmarked the new executable.

What changes between editions?

Decision Original Shogun 2 Complete Edition
Campaigns Depends on the base game and expansion content you own Shogun 2, Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai included
Interface Legacy interface Updated UI with 4K support and modern battle controls
Architecture Legacy release 64-bit upgrade
Minor factions Legacy campaign roster; mods can change availability 54 newly playable minor factions across three campaigns, 18 each
Realm Divide Legacy campaign rules Adjustable slider, including the option to turn it off
Mods Existing original-game mod ecosystem Mod.io; original mods incompatible
An ongoing old save Continue in the original game Cross-edition transfer not confirmed by the FAQ

The faction count is easy to misread: it does not mean 54 new clans in the main Sengoku campaign. Read the minor-clan breakdown before choosing a new start. Likewise, changes to fatigue and unit bonuses mean a classic army guide needs an edition check rather than a new label pasted onto old advice.

How much does it cost, and who gets 75% off?

The official announced list prices are US $39.99, UK £34.99 and €39.99. These are publisher reference prices, not a live regional store feed. Other regions, taxes and sales can produce a different amount.

The loyalty offer is specifically for owners of the original Shogun 2 on Steam. The announced window runs from the 13 October launch until 12 November 2026 at 16:00 GMT. At the US list price, $39.99 × 25% is $9.9975, approximately $10 after rounding. Ownership, region and checkout decide the final amount; do not expect the Steam offer to apply to another storefront.

Estimate your edition price

Enter the current local list price. Select your store and ownership; the published Steam loyalty offer is applied only within its announced dates.

Estimate only; not a live store feed. The announced window ends 12 November 2026 at 16:00 GMT. Tax, regional pricing and store rounding can change the total.

  1. Sign into the Steam account that owns the original game.
  2. Open the official Complete Edition store page.
  3. Check the displayed discount and included products before paying.
  4. Retain the original installation if an ongoing campaign depends on Workshop content.

What does the new interface actually offer?

The map overlay helps you read the campaign at a glance. The new battle-space controls expose movement paths, fire arcs and unit markers; they are useful when learning how an army is positioned, rather than merely viewing a prettier battlefield.

Diplomacy also has an updated presentation. That does not remove campaign pressure: Realm Divide still needs planning when enabled. Choose the setting deliberately instead of assuming a beginner recommendation from 2011 matches the new default.

Which purchase makes sense for your situation?

New to the game: buy the package whose local checkout price suits you, then start with the beginner campaign guide. Three included campaigns offer different military eras; you do not need to begin with all three.

Original owner without a favourite overhaul: the temporary loyalty price may make the upgraded interface and extra starts worthwhile. Check the official offer before it expires; future discounts are not guaranteed.

Original owner with a long modded save: treat Complete Edition as a separate campaign library. Read mod compatibility and preserve the original setup. Buying an edition is not a reason to risk an existing save.

Returning specifically for nineteenth-century warfare: Fall of the Samurai is included, but gunpowder armies need different tactics from the Sengoku spear line. Pick the campaign for its mechanics, not the edition name alone.
