FAQ

Does Realm Divide start at one fixed province count?
Do not rely on a universal province count. Fame and campaign progress matter, and Kyoto creates its own political confrontation. Monitor the fame panel and prepare before a conquest pushes you into the crisis.
Can I turn off Realm Divide in Complete Edition?
Yes. The official Complete Edition changes describe a Realm Divide slider that supports original behavior, higher difficulty or turning the mechanic off. The classic game does not have that built-in setting.
Will allies always stay friendly after Realm Divide?
No. Existing friendly relations are not a guarantee of lasting support in the classic Sengoku crisis. Budget and deploy as though trade and diplomatic support can deteriorate.

Plan for a political crisis, not one battle

Realm Divide changes the strategic problem. An army that can beat your next neighbor may still be unable to defend the other end of your territory when diplomatic support deteriorates. Before another conquest, check clan fame and decide whether you are ready for a broader war.

The official getting-started guide explains that growing power can provoke the shogun before you march on Kyoto. Capturing the capital is another major confrontation. A universal province-count shortcut ignores that context; watch the in-game fame display instead of treating a number from a forum as a safe threshold.

Count exposed approaches, not only owned provinces. A long coast and several mainland borders can demand more defenders than a compact territory.

Pass a readiness check before expanding

  • Income: can the treasury and tax base sustain your forces if useful trade agreements disappear?
  • Replenishment: are your main regiments ready to fight another campaign, or merely still present on their cards?
  • Rear-area order: will towns remain stable when armies leave?
  • Ports: which coast permits enemy landings or a blockade that damages your budget?
  • Fronts: can you cover likely approaches without spending several turns moving one stack between them?

If several answers are weak, consolidate. Improve a dependable revenue province, replenish, scout and position a reserve. The food and economy guide explains why expansion and construction need a shared budget.

Do not assume an old alliance is insurance. Friendly relations can buy time, but the campaign should still function if a partner becomes hostile. Review access agreements and which armies depend on crossing another clan’s territory.

Choose the next conquest by position

A province is valuable if it simplifies your frontier, supports recruitment or provides reliable income. A distant isolated town may add fame and another garrison bill without making the main army stronger. Ask what the map looks like after the attack, including the route home if you lose the battle.

Keep reserves useful rather than ornamental. A modest force near a threatened port or choke point can stop an emergency from interrupting the main campaign. Army composition should fit its assignment: a defending force and a marching assault army do not need identical expensive troops.

When approaching Kyoto, read the selected clan’s victory conditions. Becoming shogun and completing a campaign are related objectives, not permission to ignore the remaining required provinces or deadline. The beginner guide covers the basic campaign loop.

Complete Edition: check the Realm Divide slider

Complete Edition adds a campaign setup control for Realm Divide. According to the official changes, it allows original behavior, increased difficulty or disabling the mechanic. That is a substantial difference from classic Sengoku advice.

This page has not tested the new build’s hidden threshold values. It also does not apply Sengoku diplomacy wholesale to the allegiance systems in Fall of the Samurai.
