FAQ

Which clan should a Shogun 2 beginner choose?
Shimazu offers a relatively contained southern Kyushu start; Chosokabe offers an island position. Choose by geography and preferred troops rather than assuming the strongest battlefield trait makes the easiest opening.
Do these tips apply to Complete Edition?
Campaign planning remains a useful starting point, but this guide is scoped to classic Sengoku. Complete Edition changes controls, corrects infantry fatigue and adds a Realm Divide slider; it is not a claim of testing the new build.

Choose a campaign you can understand

Choose the main SHOGUN 2 campaign for this opening plan. Rise and Fall of the Samurai have different rosters and political systems. Normal difficulty gives you room to learn why an army or province is failing before increasing the challenge.

A position with fewer exposed borders is easier to read. Shimazu starts in southern Kyushu; Chosokabe starts on Shikoku. The clan selector compares those advantages with Oda’s cheaper infantry. A strong clan bonus does not erase a difficult neighborhood.

Check five things before ending a turn

  1. Income: look at recurring income after upkeep, rather than only the treasury balance. Recruitment today can make next turn unaffordable.
  2. Food: inspect the food change on planned building upgrades. Leave room for another captured province’s demands.
  3. Public order: check whether a town stays stable when the field army leaves. A temporarily occupied settlement is not a secure rear area.
  4. Movement: scout ahead with an available agent or a cautious advance. Avoid spending every movement point to stand beside an unseen enemy stack.
  5. Diplomacy: check who will enter a war and which trade routes cross hostile waters.

The food and economy guide explains the construction tradeoffs. You do not need to build every available upgrade immediately. Keep money for replenishment and an unexpected attack.

The army cards and finance display belong in the same decision: a unit must be useful in battle and affordable on the campaign map.

Fight one deliberate battle

Build a simple army whose roles you recognize. Spear infantry holds a threatened frontage, bows pressure an approaching enemy, and a small reserve covers gaps. The army composition guide explains those roles without requiring an expensive all-samurai roster.

Pause when the difficulty permits it. Check the enemy’s approach, turn your line toward the threat, then issue a few orders. Sending every unit forward makes it harder to see a flank collapsing. Keep your general close enough to support morale, but avoid committing him to an uncertain melee simply because his cavalry looks powerful.

Use Yari Wall before contact when appropriate. It is a directional defensive formation, so protect its sides. A unit standing beneath incoming arrows needs a different answer from one receiving a frontal cavalry charge.

Unit cards let you select the threatened regiment directly. The night setting here illustrates the interface, not a suggested first-battle condition.

Consolidate before the next war

After a victory, replenish, repair useful buildings and check the captured province. Ask whether the army can leave without unrest and whether you can pay its upkeep without the previous enemy’s trade. If either answer is no, a short pause is useful progress.

Watch clan fame as your territory grows. Read the Realm Divide preparation guide before treating Kyoto as another routine conquest.

Version scope and sources

This is planning advice for classic Sengoku, not a deterministic turn-by-turn script or a Complete Edition playtest. The official classic manual supports the tutorial, geography and general-morale context. Official Complete Edition changes document the newer controls, corrected infantry fatigue and Realm Divide slider.
